Subject: FaxFinder Client v1.x.x and v2.x.x Software fails to install
Description:
The FaxFinder Client versions 1.x.x and 2.x.x fail to install on Windows 7, 8, and 10. When the installation fails, it rolls back and shows that the installation was incomplete.

NOTE: If you have an FFx30 model and do not use any FFx20 or older models, then you may update to the 3.x.x FaxFinder Client software found on the current FaxFinder product pages:
--> http://www.multitech.com/brands/faxfinder

Try running the following uninstaller; when run as administrator it should finish removing the software.
--> https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall/en

You may also try the following if the uninstaller above doesn't help:

The Windows update KB3072630 prevents the older version of FaxFinder Client software from successfully installing and uninstalling. The 1.x/2.x FaxFinder Client will function normally with the KB3072630 Windows update once it is installed, but you will need to do the workaround to install or uninstall the effected FaxFinder Clients.

There are two methods to workaround this security update. The preferred method is to add the RemappedElevatedProxiesPolicy value in the Windows Registry (see instructions below).
On Windows 7 and 8 you also have the option of uninstalling these updates, but with Windows 10 this security update is part of the initial version and can't be uninstalled.

Procedure to temporarily modify the Windows registry to allow the 1.x/2.x FaxFinder Client to install or uninstall. This will work on Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1, and Windows 10:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Note: It is always recommended to backup your registry before editing it.

2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

Note: If this subkey does not exist, create it by right clicking on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows and selecting New>Key and then enter "Installer" as the key's name.

3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-Bit) Value.

4. For the DWORD name, type RemappedElevatedProxiesPolicy, and then press Enter.

5. Right-click RemappedElevatedProxiesPolicy, and then click Modify.

6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

7. Install the FaxFinder Client.

8. After the application installs successfully, reset the RemappedElevatedProxiesPolicy DWORD value to 0 to re-enable the security fix for KB 3072630.

Procedure to temporarily uninstall the KB3072630 Windows update on Windows 7 or Windows 8:
Note this is not the preferred method since future Windows update may cause problems with this method.

1. Go to Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Update (or Control Panel -> Windows Update) and click the "Change Settings" option.

2. Verify that "Install Updates Automatically" is NOT selected. If this is selected, the update that causes the problem will automatically be updated again and cause the Client installation to fail.

3. Go back to Windows Update and click on "View update history".

4. In the top panel will be a link for "Installed Updates" that will allow you to remove an update, click on this link.

5. Find the update KB3072630 in the list, right click on it, and selected uninstall.

6. Windows will uninstall the update and reboot. Afterwards you should be able to install the FaxFinder Client.

7. After installing the FaxFinder Client, return to Windows Update and set the Windows Update settings back to their original settings.
Note: If your Windows Update settings weren't previously set to "Install Updates Automatically", you can manually reinstall the Windows Update KB3072630 again.

If you get the "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed" error after uninstalling the KB3072630 update, then the Windows update KB3139923 will also need to be uninstalled. Follow the same instructions above for uninstalling the KB3139923 update.
