Products: MT9234MU, MT9234ZBA-USB
Subject: Does the MT9234MU or MT9234ZBA-USB work on a Mac?
Description:
Yes. The older MT9234MU and MT9234ZBA-USB shipped with a 32-bit Kernel EXTension (KEXT, aka driver) with a version of 1.1.x. However, the 1.1.x drivers did not allow those models to work on a Mac that had booted in 64-bit kernel mode (typical of Mac OS X 10.6 Server installations and newer Macs).

There is a 32-bit/64-bit build of the 1.x.x driver for Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.9 for the MT9234MU and MT9234ZBA-USB modems that works with Macs that have booted in 32-bit or 64-bit kernel mode. It has a version of 1.2.x. The latest version may be downloaded at the following link:

NOTE: If you are using Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or newer and you were using the original driver (version 1.x.x), then contact us by creating a support case at support.multitech.com.

There is also another version of the driver that we call the pseudo-CDC driver. It has a version of 2.2.x and also supports 32-bit/64-bit kernels. The benefit to the pseudo-CDC driver is that it becomes recognized natively by Mac OS X as a modem and a fax device. The latest version for OS X 10.4 through 10.9 may be downloaded at the following link:

For Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and newer, use driver version 2.2.5 or newer. See Resolution #5062026 for more details.

Compared to our MT9234MU-CDC and MT9234ZBA-USB-CDC modems, the 2.2.x pseudo-CDC driver mentioned above has an extra step involved where it programs the MT9234MU or MT9234ZBA-USB on the fly to use the built-in Apple CDC-ACM USB driver. The MT9234MU-CDC and MT9234ZBA-USB-CDC modems do not need a driver installed and use Apple's CDC-ACM USB driver by default. Essentially, with the 2.2.x driver linked above, your MT9234MU or MT9234ZBA-USB will be transformed into a MT9234MU-CDC or MT9234ZBA-USB-CDC with the benefit being that it may be used with the built-in Mac OS X Print & Fax support.

NOTE: As of January 22, 2013, the above drivers (1.2.5 and 2.2.4) also work with Mac OS X 10.8.2.
